#H50 Review: 9.09 Mai ka po mai ka ‘oia’i’o (Truth Comes from the Night)

Hey everyone!  I hope you all had a fantastic weekend.  Me?  Well, mine was less than fantastic and full of what seemed like never ending family drama.  Everything is fine, don’t worry, but it’s been several exhausting days.  Unfortunately, that means, I won’t be doing a full review this week.  Just a few quick observations then I’m going to throw it to you guys to expand on in the comments section, if you so choose.

Adam and the gun:  Like the restaurant story line, this story came to a rather abrupt end.  I’m 50-50 on this one.  First, there was all the worry from Tani over what Steve’s reaction would be if she accused Adam and she was wrong or worse, if she was right.  There was all the fandom discussion over Tani and Adam keeping it all away from Steve and how he’d react when he found out.

All unnecessary talk and worry, it seems, since we never got to see anything even remotely like that.  I’m disappointed because I would have loved to see Steve drag them both on the carpet for acting alone and keeping it from him (even though we all know he’d get over it quickly and understandingly).  I would have liked one of those heart to hearts between Steve and Adam after the arrest, at the very least.

But, of course, we’ll probably never hear about it again.  Next week is Steve and Joe’s SEAL story, then hiatus, then the “expendables episode”.  By the time we’re back to an Oahu based crime of the week, it will be mid-January and this gun story will be buried and forgotten.  But, let’s be honest.  It was such a ridiculous story anyway and no one believed for one blessed minute Adam killed Noriko.  Maybe it’s better they just did a cut and run on it.

Comic-con:   I loved this story.  I loved all the parallels it had.  The superhero parallel of a child who watched his parents killed in front of him, who’s determined to find out the reasons behind it and chooses to try to make the world a better place by trying to stop the bad guys.  Classic Batman!

But there was also the parallel of our own superhero, our SuperSEAL.  Listening to Steve describe why Batman was his favorite, how he was just a human being with no extraordinary ability who had to work and train his whole life to reach his peak so he could go out there and do what he needed to do, you couldn’t help but realize Steve was describing himself, whether he realized it or not.

I liked that the story gave Jerry some “police” work to do as well as using his nerd-credentials at the magic table.  It’s nice the way Steve is bringing Jerry into cases more and more, making him feel more like a member of the team instead of just the tech guy.  I don’t want to see Jerry leaping after perps (crashing into them with motor vehicles is fine, of course 😉😉) and I really don’t think we ever need to see him packing a gun, but watching him in rendition was a blast.

And of course, I adored the ending with Steve and Danny as comic book super heroes.  That was inspired.  Jerry finishing off The Night Sentinel’s comic book with the Adventures of Steve and Danny was great but actually seeing it on screen as the comic book came to life was awesome.  Jerry may have written it as a fantasy ending, but we all know we’ve seen Steve pull off that helicopter maneuver ourselves first hand, and have known for a very long time, he’s our super SEAL hero!

So many players, so little time:  I did enjoy this episode, even if it was a bit ….what’s a good word……choppy?  There were extended absences of more than one member of the team throughout the episode.  Don’t get me wrong, the ebb and flow of the story was good, with the usual twists and turns that always makes H50 enjoyable, even if it wasn’t as fast paced as usual.

The disappearances of team members felt disjointed.  We’ve become used to seeing Danny in a couple of scenes, then having him disappear for a period of time, only to reappear at some later point.  But this time it happened with several others as well.  Steve doesn’t appear at all until over eight minutes in,  then Danny is off screen for a while, then Grover, then Adam and so on.  It seemed like the only person who was consistently there was Jerry.  I suppose, considering the comic book/nerdy subject matter, that made sense, but it was still a bit jarring to have so many of the others appear, disappear then reappear again.

But, I’m thinking this is something we’ll just need to get used to.  There are now seven full time members of Five-0 to be utilized in the same 42-43 minutes we’ve always had.  There is also the fact that it seems the writers are giving Alex a few more breaks in episodes.  Add that to the already reduced schedule Scott’s had for years and there’s going to be times when others fill that void only to be moved aside when Alex and Scott come back on screen.  This is probably the new normal.  Personally, I’m ok with that.  I just have to get a bit more used to it.  But, as long as I still get my mandatory McDanno time, I’ll take it anyway I can get it.

I really enjoyed the fact that there was only one story line in this episode even if it seemed a bit sluggish to me.  Most of the time, episodes fly by, jumping from one story to the next, there being so much going on.  I’m not going to complain though because I prefer one story episodes over multiple ones any day.  And, of course, I was a bit distracted with everything going on so it could be a failing on my part more than the episode’s.

And there was Eddie helping on a raid!  Yay!  I’ve missed seeing Eddie!  And I adored Jerry’s Batgirl story. Yet another parallel since Jerry, like Batgirl, needed to prove himself to the team before being fully accepted.  His addition making both himself and the team stronger, just like Batgirl and the Dynamic Duo!

And the ending, in the comic book shop was golden because we got a fantastic Steve/Danny/Charlie scene.  I always love it when we get to see these three together.  Steve’s new “Mini D” nickname for Charlie is friggin’ adorable.  They could not have cast a better kid than Zach to play Charlie. He really does look like a “Mini D”!

Well, that’s it folks.  Sorry this is so short and incomplete but life.. you know!

Have a great rest of your week.  Next weekend doesn’t look to be too much better than this one for me.  I’ll do my best to give a better review of what looks to be an awesome episode revolving around Steve and Joe and the SEALS.  That always makes for a great Friday night!

Aloha.  Malama Pono

Screencaps:  I’ve been so overwhelmed over the last week or so, I didn’t even get a chance to re-watch the episode, which is another reason why this review is so unusually concise! 😉😉 I did grab just a couple of quick shots that I needed but other than that, I relied on CBS and the wonderful @alohaspaceman for photos for this review.  Thanks Lisa! 😃😃

Linda, I think the length and depth of your review is spot on. The episode was entertaining, but decidedly lightweight, with a few standout scenes. I agree with your take on “Adam and the Gun” — a lot of build up, with a subdued result. And, I’m still wondering about Adam the character — at this point, he doesn’t strike me as a everyday fit in the crew (in fact i was a little surprised to see a gun on his hip). Guess it will take some getting used to. I do like the course that Jerry has taken … I was a big critic of his for a long time, thinking the show did not need a slapstick character. But he now plays a believable, critical role in 5-0.

In about 48 hours, I’ll start getting my game face on, preparing for an action packed episode on Friday …. I wanna see Steve & Joe White kick some major BUTTTT !

    • It’s always a fantastic episode with we get a true SEAL story. I have not doubt this one will not disappoint in that area at all.

As for Adam….. yeah, it’s going to take a bit to get used to him in HQ and walking around as one of the team but it’s better than that pseudo-team story line he had last year. That was so tiresome!

Relieved to know everything is OK.- a bit concerned when I didn’t get my weekend kool-aid alert 🙂 like you I need to re-watch this one. After a exhausting week at work I could barely keep my eyes open…..and the west coast didn’t get to see the Adam/gun story resolved because CBS cut in with breaking news. So, I can’t comment on it except to say I must have been very short and sweet. Overall a cute story, maybe a bit too much standing around a crowded smart table (maybe that’s why some of them kept disappearing). Loved Steve’s new beanbag “toy” he really is using his head rather than leaping into action…..maybe Danny sense is rubbing off on him and they have definitely eased up on Alex doing crazy stunts too. We got a carument, Eddy & mini D….very cute. I also thought the comic book takedown was clever and less wear on Alex. A team of seven…..almost double what they started with. I still want as much Steve & Danny as I can, but great chemistry means a ton of possibilities. Just about any combination works and they seemed to mix it up quite a bit this week Coming up next – .not looking forward to Greer causing Steve more grief, but nice to see Joe.

    • Ugh.. I’m with you on Greer. So sick and tired of ex-friend CIAs (or whatever alphabet agency they crawl off to) coming back to wreck more havoc on Steve. Whether it’s physical or emotional trauma… enough! I wish they’d all just go away and never come back.

Great review. I agree I am with you on dropping stories yet some the drag out for five years. So dreading the episodes after hiatus I am always fearful of our yearly wasted episode and all the nastiness on social media around it. Wish we could have a one season break on it.

    • I’m regarding that episode like a root canal. You know the date for it is drawing close, you dread it’s arrival with your whole being and you have no problem putting it off as long as you possibly can! ROFL

Good analogy although I am getting the vibe Danny might be in danger so I am hopeful Steve will be all about Danny and she is just what he has to suffer through to get what he wants back!!!

Great review, Linda! Gotta say the resolution of Adam’s story, such as it was, left me a bit confused,as we still don’t really know who killed his sister and why. As for the COTW,I loved the homage to the various superheroes, especially Batgirl,as,like you say,Jerry can relate to her in the sense that just as she had to prove herself to Batman, Jerry had to prove himself worthy to be part of H50 and he has done so superbly! The comic book scenes were awesome and I,for one, would love to see a full length H50 comic book-it would be so fantastic and I would get it in a heartbeat! Like you said, we’ve seen Steve do the helicopter thing before and we know he can do it, even though in this case,it was an imaginary ending to The Sentinel’s story and one that I think he would have been proud of! It was great to see Eddie again, doing what he does best of course and he was ready to go,you could see it in his eyes,as if he were saying to Steve,”I’ll find him-trust me!” Looking forward to the next chapter in Steve & Joe’s journey together, although, like you, I am not wanting to see Joe cause Steve more grief, but it is what it is.

    • It was the old Yakuza “banker” who killed Noriko and tried to frame Adam for it. That’s what the beginning scene of the episode showed. He said he did it because Adam was withdrawing the money that was being used to pay off his father’s debt to the head Yakuza guy at that table. Not really a plausible reason but, whatever. It served it’s purpose to bring an end to that story which, it seems, is all they were going for

Well, even though this review was short, it hit every mark perfectly! Sure, the ep wasn’t as action packed as others, but with the SEAL story next (that looks Great), and the Expendables soon too, a calm one before the storm is welcome. Anyway, this ep did include the most important parts like a cargument that was funny and meaningful, Jerry getting to show more of his personality, and of course, the sweet/funny ending we always want. “Mini D” was SO cute! We always knew and still know that Steve and Danny are real live superheroes, but now there’s more proof! I am glad that Adam is working with them and that turmoil is not plaguing him (right now). I am very excited to see Joe next time and to see some of the SuperSEAL we all love💗. And let’s not forget how cute Danny was at the end trying not to buy the comic book. Plus, how many people noticed Steve amd Adam inconspicuously reading comics then throwing them down when people arrived? ROLF!

I liked the episode.I wonder where Scott disappeared to. Unless his scenes was were shot earlier. We get an episode soon with Grace in it. My how she has grown. Steve and Danny go college hunting with Grace that would be intersting. Sorry cannot spell and I got side track. I hope you have good day.

Well, it was not my favorite episode but it was not bad. The beginning of the season was so great that it will be hard to beat those episodes. I agree, the ending of Adam’s story was a disappointment but I’m glad it is over. I,too, loved the Steve and
Danny scenes. They always make any episode fun. Thanks so much for your review.

It was a cute, light-hearted episode. Bean-bag guns, comics, capes!! And even Eddie!! I love our super heroes!! And you nailed it as always!! Jerry did a great job finishing the comic book!! After all, isn’t Steve his superhero??

The Adam story was meh and mercifully it’s done and over with. Like you said, by the time January roles around the gun story will be long forgotten. I love Adam but is he totally necessary on the team? No. I actually think Jerry is more useful. But if the revolving door of 7 keeps Alex healthy and helps fills the Scott void, then I’m all in!!

I’m looking forward to this week’s episode – love my SuperSEAL Steve – though I have a sinking feeling it’s not going to end well and we know that Steve gets hurt. Oh my heart. As for the after-hiatus episode, it’s like surgery, the build up is awful, some anesthesia (pick your choice!) eases the pain and VIOLA, it’s all done and over with (but sadly only until the next time, because we know there’ll be a next time, sigh…)

Very shallow observation, how sexy was Steve in those blue shirts!! 😍😍 Be still my heart and his interaction with “mini D” just priceless!! To quote Meaghan, “I do declare” as I fan myself!

Till the next episiode, have a great week!

    • Revolving door of 7… what a great phrase and so perfect. If it keeps Alex happy, healthy and committed to the show, bring it on.

Yeah, I’m not really looking forward to 9.11 either. I’m so sick and tired of resurrecting that old tired dynamic, it got old and boring a long time ago. Let it come and let it rapidly go. But like you said, like the belch from a bad onion, it always returns.

Did anyone else notice the irony..of “that” episode being 9.11??🙄..I hope it’s just the obligatory 1 episode a season..and not a romance renewal since Steve and Lynn broke up…I’ve said it before.. I unfortunately have a nagging feeling those 2 will be end game…😖
